Jane Applegate Speaks in Overland Park; Shares 5 Essentials for Small Business Results

Jane Applegate is “America’s leading small business expert.”  She is a former reporter and syndicated columnist for the Los Angeles Times and author of four popular books on small business management.   I was fortunate  to meet Jane and hear her speak at the Thinking Bigger Speaker Series’ June event.According to Applegate, the five essentials to small business, aka entrepreneurial, SUCCESS are

    * People
    * Money
    * Marketing
    * Competition
    * Balance

Following are a few gems from Applegate’s presentation.  Get even more specific advice in her book “201 Great Ideas for Your Small Business”Check it out on Amazon.com.

On People:  Work with those that make you laugh as well as those who get things done.  Do YOU have someone you work with who you wish would “vaporize in front of your eyes”?  If that’s the case, begin to build your case to get them out of your organization.

On Money:  “No credit to customers!!”  If you’re not taking deposits now, start!  If you are taking deposits, increase them!  And MANAGE your Accounts Receivable…YOU are not a BANK!!

On Marketing:  Create complete integration of your marketing efforts.  Many entrepreneurs don’t have a “look” or don’t stay true to that look.  Don’t confuse clients and prospective customers with a hazy brand identity.

On Competition:  Bookmark your competitors’ websites and look at them regularly (at least weekly).  One business owner in the audience used that strategy to learn that their competitor was no longer serving a specific market niche…they expanded their business quickly by picking up the competition’s former customers.

On Balance:  UNPLUG!!  Take a look at how you spend your time.  Boost productivity by being focused rather than ON 24/7.  You must recharge in order to remain effective.
